By 8:46pm, the job had been done and Werder had successfully put their second training camp behind them. On their return journey from Schruns in Austria, the Green-Whites made a stop-over at the DKB-Arena and notched up a convincing 5-1 (2-0) win over FC Hansa Rostock. Werder’s pre-season friendly record now impressively reads eight wins in eight games. General manager Klaus Allofs came to a positive conclusion: “We did things quite well today. Considering we have two training camps behinds us now and everyone was, to an extent, with their thoughts back home, we played and combined quite decently.”
Werder got off to a lightening start and with just two minutes played, Jurica Vranjes converted a delivery from Aaron Hunt to make it 1-0. In the 36th minute, Markus Rosenberg doubled the Green-Whites lead with a stunningly taken flying header to make it 2-0 at half time. Just three minutes after the re-start, Hugo Almeida notched up Werder’s third. With the three goal cushion the visitors took their foot off the gas and allowed FCH back into the game firstly with a missed penalty by Kevin Schindler before Regis Dorn made it 1-3 (65’). Thirteen minutes later Hugo Almeida headed home to restore the three goal deficit and then, shortly before the end, Mesut Özil finished off an impressive solo run to make the final score 5-1 (84’).
After the game, the Werder contingency made their way back to Bremen. Schruns is a thing of the past now but pre-season preparations have not yet been completed: “We are all looking forward to getting home, although we do have a lot of appointments on our schedule,” explained trainer Schaaf. On Thursday the Green-Whites will be at a sponsoring event in Oberhausen before taking on Trabzonspor in their next friendly clash on Saturday.
