The Greek national sides Euro 2004 win was well recieved at the Werder training camp in Norderney. Head coach Thomas Schaaf, who watched Sunday evenings game with his training staff and general manager Klaus Allofs at the team headquarters "Golfhotel Norderney" said afterwards: "If you consider the tournament as a whole then it's a major surprise. Having seen the performances in the quarter- and semi-finals I believed this success was possible."
Championship winning goalscorer Angelos Charisteas has been particularly praised for his efforts. "Harry" has been offered a long holiday by coach Schaaf and his return to Bremen will be decided during this break. "Footballers live from the self confidence they win from their own actions. 'Harry' has greatly profitted from this in the last few weeks. Because of this I don't fear that he'll fall into a hole after the tournament and his holiday. He'll return to the team quickly", said Schaaf confidently. General manager added: "If 'Harry' performs for us as he performed during the European championships then the likelyhood of him playing a major part is high. He's one of the Euro 2004 heroes and that can only be positive for the competition within the team."
The Werder coach spoke with great respect of the work done by Greek coach Otto Rehhagel: "He has proved once again how well he can organise, discipline and motivate a team. The Greeks didn't just defend their way to the title, thy presented themselves bravely and passionately. which was clear to see in the final."
Sport director Klaus Allofs also believes Otto Rehhagel played a vital roll in the title win. As far as Allofs is concerned Otto Rehhagel is a definate candidate to succeed Rudi Voller at the DFB. "He's an experienced trainer who can put a team together well. He's courageous enough to make unpopular decisions. In my opinion the Rehhagel-solution is just as good as Ottmar Hitzfeld would have been."
