The situation is a serious one, but all is not yet lost. The target of Champions League qualification is still within touching distance. For all that has passed, Werder Bremen are still just three points behind second placed Hamburg SV and one point adrift of third placed FC Schalke 04.
If they do want to be involved in Europe’s biggest club competition next season though, the Green-Whites need to get a grip on themselves and start taking points again. A fact which general manager Klaus Allofs is all too aware of and he was very clear that the performance against Duisburg will carry consequences: “The trainer is in a position to react now thanks to the less strained personnel situation. If anyone puts our Champions League qualification in danger, he will feel the consequences of that.”
Head coach Thomas Schaaf is still convinced his side are capable of making a happy end to the season despite the recent developments “We can still reach our target and there are no problems within the team itself. What we need to do now is to ensure our individual egos take second place to Werder Bremen’s needs. Then we can turn things around.”
Today the players will be given the opportunity to take stock of the situation. The next training session will be held on Tuesday.
