There is something of great familiarity about the pictures from the last few days. Just as against VfB Stuttgart and Glasgow Rangers, the Werder players were again left despairing in front of the opposition goal with the ball seemingly refusing to go in. Once again, this time against Wolfsburg, there was to be no joy, in spite of plenty of chances, for Werder Bremen.
"I’m very sad and disappointed. I don’t know quite what it is but there is just something missing when it comes to our finishing lately", explained Brazilian international Naldo, who is baffled by Werder’s apparent goal drought. German international Clemens Fritz is equally puzzled by the chasm between the Green-Whites performances and their results. "Once again we got into the game well and created a number of good openings but, once again, we just couldn’t secure the reward for our efforts", explained the frustrated full-back.
Thomas Schaaf saw a game in which everything worked well for his side, right up until they reached the opposition penalty area: "We just don’t seem to be able to make use of the chances we create at the moment and so, we are unable to play our games in a relaxed fashion. Instead of that we find ourselves launching attack after attack", remarked the trainer, who witnessed his side have 23 efforts on goal on Sunday but, in turn, saw the only goal of the game, in the 50th minute, scored again his team.
