It’s been a week of surprise introductions to the Werder squad, and that looks set to continue. Following the unexpected return of both Clemens Fritz and Patrick Owomoyela in the UEFA Cup on Wednesday, today’s Bundsliga clash with 1. FC Nuremburg could see Sebastian Boenisch make his comeback for the Green-Whites.

“It would be fantastic to be involved again”, commented the full-back, who hasn’t appeared for Werder since the fifth match day of the season due to a knee injury. Trainer Thomas Schaaf is still holding out on a final decision as to whether or not to add Boenisch to the squad for Saturday’s game.

Less likely is the availability of either Patrick Owomoyela or Boubacar Sanogo for the match against FCN. Both had to pull out of Friday’s training through illness whilst Tim Borowski was excluded from training as he continued to suffer from pain in his foot. The German international would not have been an option this weekend regardless of his fitness having picked up his fifth yellow card and, with that, a suspension for the 20th match day.

With all introductions and absentees considered, Werder will go into the game against Nuremberg with the following squad of players: Wiese, Vander, Mertesacker, Tosic, Fritz, Baumann, Jensen, Diego, Vranjes, Kruse, Hunt, Harnik, Özil, Klasnic, Rosenberg, Almeida, and possibly Boenisch.
