Werder Bremen crashed out of the DFB Cup in the round of the last sixteen as they went down to an unlucky 1:2 (0:1) at the hands of Borussia Dortmund. In a breathtaking tie, watched on by a 64,100 strong crowd at the Signal-Iduna-Park, Giovanni Federico (19’) and Diego Klimowicz (81’) were on target for the home side, but for all their efforts, a late Diego penalty strike (82’) proved too little, too late.

The Green-Whites controlled proceedings during the first half and had chances to go in front through Ivan Klasnic (12’ /14’) but with 19 minutes played, the visitors found themselves a goal down. Mladen Petric fed Federico with a perfect pass from the left and the BVB striker slotted past Tim Wiese into the far corner to make it 0:1. Werder forced the issue and went in desperate search of an equaliser but there was nothing doing before the break.

Thomas Schaaf’s men were the more active side in the second half and attacked bravely, but not without leaving space for the home side to hit on the break. With ten minutes to go, BVB punished Werder’s open play with substitute Diego Klimowicz taking on a pass from Sebastian Kehl and bursting through to make it 0:2.

Despite the increased deficit, the visitors refused to throw in the towel and just two minutes after going two down, were back in the tie. Kehl felled Markus Rosenberg with a wild, lunging challenge in the Borussia box and the resulting penalty was coolly converted by substitute Diego - 1:2. In the 85th minute, referee Fandel pointed to the spot again after another foul on Rosenberg - this time by Martin Amedick - but this time, Werder’s Brazilian playmaker had his spot kicked saved by BVB keeper Marc Ziegler.

The Green-Whites threw everything into attack but it was all to no avail and the game finished in a 1:2 defeat for Thomas Schaaf’s side. Werder bow out of this seasons DFB Cup despite an impressive team performance on the night.
