Two matches each 45 minutes, two defeats, 0-3 in goals scored: An injury-weakened SV Werder finished the Wintercup in Düsseldorf on Sunday 15 January 2012 in fourth place of four teams. One week before the start of the Bundesliga second half at Kaiserslautern, the Green-Whites first played against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the short tournament at Espirit Arena. After a 2-0 defeat, Werder then faced the German champions Borussia Dortmund for third place and lost 1-0 on a goal by former Bremen player Mohamed Zidan in front of 37,522 fans to take fourth place. Host team Fortuna Düsseldorf, who beat Dortmund in penalties in the other semi, won the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Wintercup reigning champion Gladbach.
"It was an excellent event. The some 38,000 spectators made for a great atmosphere and the participating teams offered a final chance to test at a high level," said manager Klaus Allofs. "Especially against Gladbach we did an orderly job. The final placing gave a clear sign that we still have many areas to improve."
