For Werder first teamers Maximilian Eggestein and Levin Ötzunali there were two successful debuts to celebrate on Thursday. Eggestein made his first ever appearance for Germany when he appeared for the U20s against Italy. The youngster came on in the 65th minute and scored his first international goal eight minutes later to double Germany's lead.
"Of course it was a nice feeling, but the most important thing was that we gave a good performance as a team and were able to beat Italy. It's even nicer for me to be able to have contributed to the win," said the 18-year-old.
Eggestein will now be accompanied by Manuel Klon, Werder's reserve team and youth goalkeeping coach. The 28-year-old has been appointed goalkeeping coach to the Germany U20 side. "After visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa on Friday, we now fly to Poland for another friendly match on Monday."
Eggestein's teammate Levin Ötzunali also played for the U20s at the World Cup in New Zealand this summer and the talented midfielder made his debut for the U21s on Thursday. Ötzunali put in an impressive performance and scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute to make it 2-1.
Theodor Gebre Selassie failed to make it onto the pitch in the Czech Republic's 2-1 win over Kazakhstan in their EURO qualifier. Izet Hajrovic, who is on loan at Spanish side Eibar for a year, made a substitute appearance for Bosnia in their EURO qualifier defeat to Belgium.
