Matthias Lehmann's 88th-minute penalty was a painful one for Raphael Wolf to concede. Not only did it cost Werder two points in their away game in Cologne, but the Bremen goalkeeper had also had a blinder against the Billy Goats. If not for Wolf, SVW would never have been as close to winning as they were.
Despite taking 14 shots in total, Köln only put two on target excluding the penalty, but the 26-year-old keeper was on hand on both occasions. "He played superbly today. We could have been a couple of goals down much earlier if not for him," said Clemens Fritz after the final whistle.
Werder's number one turned a shot from Jonas Hector around the post in the 73rd minute, before making a stunning reflex save from Kevin Wimmer ten minutes later. "Rapha put in a great performance and kept us in the game," raved head coach Viktor Skripnik.
A run of four away games without loss has had a lot to do with the performances of Raphael Wolf and the rest of the back line. Werder have conceded a total of just three goals in trips to Hoffenheim, Schalke, Freiburg and Köln. "Rapha has come away from the battle for places in recent weeks invigorated," said Skripnik. "We're delighted."
