Werder Bremen have announced the club’s team council for the 2024/25 season. Michael Zetterer, Milos Veljkovic, Jens Stage, Niklas Stark and Leonardo Bittencourt will form a leadership team around club captain Marco Friedl over the course of the upcoming campaign.

After their first match of the afternoon ended in a 1-1 draw against Stade Rennais, SV Werder Bremen sent out a different side for their second clash with the French first-division side. After a hard-fought opening half, the hosts were able to take the lead through Benjamin Bourigeaud (48'). 

SV Werder Bremen drew 1-1 in the first of their two friendlies against French first-division side Stade Rennais on Saturday afternoon. Julian Malatini (13') opened the scoring for the Green-Whites, before Alan do Marcolino levelled it up for the hosts (35').

Mitchell Weiser signed a contract extension at Werder Bremen just before the final home match of last season. The full-back was in the mixed zone today as he looked ahead to the new season and reviewed how pre-season has gone so far, giving his thoughts on the Green-Whites' current status.

However, the Green-Whites will play one final friendly match before then, against Stade Rennes on Saturday (10/08/2024). In the Mixed Zone, the 30-year-old spoke about how he is looking forward to the final pre-season game and the start of the new campaign.

SV Werder Bremen celebrated a 2-1 win in their second pre-season friendly against Coventry City. A total of 11,301 spectators were on hand at the Coventry Building Society Arena to watch the match, the second of the day between the two clubs. SV Werder Bremen fell to a 4-0 defeat in the first of their two friendlies against Coventry City on Saturday, 3rd August. Goals from Justin Obikwu (7’), Fabio Tavares (20’, 67’), and Elliot Betjemann (28’) saw the Championship side come out on top, with the match played behind closed doors.

In a blow for Werder Bremen and Amos Pieper, the centre-back picked up a thigh muscle injury in training on Tuesday. This was confirmed by an MRI scan on Wednesday.

Romano Schmid has enjoyed a successful season so far. The Graz-born midfielder played an important role in Austria’s campaign at EURO 2024 after some consistent performances. After some well-deserved time off, Schmid, along with international teammate Marco Grüll, completed the standard pre-season fitness tests on Monday and then looked ahead to the new season on Tuesday as he spoke to the press.

Amos Pieper grins triumphantly into the camera alongside six of his teammates.
