SV Werder Bremen came from behind to win 4-2 away at VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday evening. Tiago Tomás gave the hosts the lead (19’), before Mitchell Weiser equalised late into first-half injury time (45’+5). The second half saw Felix Agu put the Green-Whites into the lead (51’), before Marvin Ducksch added a third goal (67’). VfL’s Patrick Wimmer was shown a straight red shortly after, before Marco Grüll made it 4-1 (72’). Joakim Mæhle was able to get another goal back for the Wolves (79’), but it wasn’t enough to take the three points away from Werder.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Ole Werner made three changes to his starting line up following the 1-0 defeat to SC Freiburg last time out. Leonardo Bittencourt, Senne Lynen and Marco Grüll came into the side in place of Jens Stage, Skelly Alvero and Derrick Köhn.

Werder’s starting line-up: Zetterer - Jung, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Lynen, Grüll, Schmid, Malatini, Agu und Friedl.

Bench: Backhaus - Deman, Pieper, Burke, Köhn, Hansen-Aarøen, Nankishi, Adeh und Topp.

Werder draw level shortly before half time

First-half highlights:

1st minute: Werder don’t waste any time going on the attack, as Ducksch flicks the ball on to Grill. The striker is unable to keep control of the ball, as Grabara is able to secure it.

4th minute: Grüll is able to keep the ball in play on the touchline, picking out Schmid on the edge of the box. But, his shot is blocked and goes out for a corner.

19th minute: Zetterer comes out to punch away a corner from Maximilian Arnold, but the Green-Whites aren’t able to clear the ball. The ball is eventually bundled over the line by Tomás to put the Wolves ahead.

40th minute: Amoura back-heels the ball to Kaminski, who drives towards goal from a tight angle. Zetterer is able to deny him with a strong leg save.

45th minute: Despite Malatini remaining on the ground after a challenge, Wolfsburg continue to play on. Tomás looks to drive down the right wing, but Zetterer is able to catch his shot.

45th minute +5: Werder are level! Ducksch plays a perfect cross into the centre of the box, where Weiser is able to meet the ball in mid-air and slot it into the back of the net. Perfect timing!

Werder come from behind to earn all three points

Second-half highlights:

51st minute: Ducksch does well to pick out Grüll just inside the box, but the striker sees his shot parried by Grabara. The rebound falls into the path of Felix Agu, who is able to slot home the rebound at the far post. Werder lead!

55th minute: Senne Lynen looks to play the ball back, but misjudges his pass and instead inadvertently sends Amoura through on goal. Fortunately, Malatini is able to get back in time to push the ball away from danger.

62nd minute: Wind looks to spring Amoura, as the attacker beats Malatini before going to ground inside the box. The referee chooses to not award a penalty.

67th minute: Werder take a 3-1 lead! Malatini wins possession as Weiser is able to set up Ducksch this time around. Werder’s number 7 meets his cross and is able to finish his shot in at the far post.

68th minute: Immediately after kick off, Wolfsburg’s Patrick Wimmer dives into a reckless challenge on Grüll, taking out his legs from behind. The referee doesn’t hesitate before showing the striker a red card.

72nd minute: 4-1! Werder counter down the left flank as Ducksch produces another perfect cross, this one picking out Grüll. The Austrian takes aim from an angle and watches as his shot is deflected in to make it 4-1!

79th minute: Wolfsburg get another one back. Mæhle cuts into the middle and lets loose a curving shot from 20 metres out that flies beyond Zetterer and in at the post.

90th minute +6: Substitute Oliver Burke leaps for a header following a corner, and is unlucky to send it over the bar.

90th minute +8: Full time! SV Werder win 4-2 away at VfL Wolfsburg.

Summary: Werder come from behind once again, winning their third straight match on their travels. Wolfsburg were able to control play for much of the first half, but Werder were able to equalise at the perfect time. Weiser’s goal shortly before half time gave the team the momentum they needed to mount a comeback in the second half. Overall, it’s a fully deserved win for the Green-Whites.
