The Green-Whites will be filled with confidence after having picked up their first league win of the season last time out, despite going a man down in the 60th minute. SV Werder now turn their attention to Saturday’s highly-anticipated clash, as they host FC Bayern München at the Weserstadion (21st September, 15:30 CEST). Mitchell Weiser will have fond memories of the most recent clash between the sides, having scored the winning goal in Munich back then. He spoke to the media during Wednesday’s Mixed Zone and previewed the match.

With the season having only just gotten underway, it’s difficult to predict how things will go for the Green-Whites. The team have reached the second round of the DFB-Pokal and taken five points from three league games so far, in addition to extending their unbeaten run to nine competitive games — a positive start, all things considered. Weiser agrees, saying “The important thing is how we continue to develop on the pitch, which we’ve seen reflected positively in our results so far this season. We need to make sure that we manage to keep this going for all 34 games this season.”

And yet, Weiser doesn’t see the recent 2-1 win against Mainz, which the team finished with only 10 men, as a coincidence. “The win definitely gives us confidence, especially having achieved it with only ten men on the pitch. However, it doesn’t surprise me at all, because I always believe in us,” he said. “We stuck together and fought hard, even when we didn’t have the ball. That’s exactly what we need in every game, starting with this Saturday.”

“What happened last season is in the past”

Werder’s number 8 will certainly have fond memories of the last time he faced the record champions, having scored the match-winner in what was SVW’s first win in 15 years against the Bavarians. Asked whether they can do it again, he said “There’s definitely a possibility of a repeat, but Saturday will be a different game and we will need to prove ourselves again. It will be a tough game. Bayern are always a dangerous side, regardless of who is on the pitch for them — what happened last season is in the past.”

One of many changes at Bayern is the addition of new head coach Vincent Kompany, who is set to take charge of his first match at the Weserstadion. His team will go into the match having scored 15 goals across their last two competitive games against Kiel (6-1 in the Bundesliga) and Dinamo Zagreb (9-2 in the Champions League). “Regardless of the number of goals they’ve scored, we need to maintain the quality that we’ve shown — we can only do that as a team, by remaining compact and making the most of our opportunities,” Weiser said. “I think that we will be able to do that and to show that on the pitch.”
