Things are going well for Romano Schmid at the moment. After recording two assists for Austria in their Nations League games over the past week, he’s now hoping to continue his form on Sunday away at VfL Wolfsburg (20/10/2024). WERDER.DE spoke to the midfielder about his performances for his country and SVW’s upcoming opponents.

Romano Schmid returned to Bremen with six points from two games from the recent international break. Austria defeated Kazakhstan 4-0 and Norway 5-1, allowing the midfielder to return to Germany full of confidence as he was back in team training on Thursday. “I will obviously look to build on those games, as I would if I played well for Werder and was then away with Austria,” said the 24-year-old.

Schmid’s two assists were from corners, assisting Philipp Lienhart against both Kazakhstan and Norway. The midfielder revealed whether or not it was planned or just a coincidence: “I couldn’t find anyone with my corners in training beforehand, but then they led to two goals in the two matches. That’s just how it goes sometimes (laughs). ‘Lieni’ timed his powerful jumps perfectly. There was a similar opportunity at EURO 2024 against Turkey when he headed my corner just over the bar. It worked perfectly this time around.”

“Be focused and be at our best”

Set pieces could also prove important in Werder’s upcoming away game against VfL Wolfsburg. The Wolves have already conceded five goals from dead balls this season, the most in the division. In Marvin Ducksch, SVW also have a set-piece specialist, as he showed with his successful free-kick in the clash with VfL in the second half of last season. “With Duckschi, we’ve got somebody that takes brilliant set pieces, especially corners. Maybe I picked something up from him,” he said with a smile on his face.

The Graz-born midfielder will be hoping to have a smile on his face after the match on Sunday too. The matchday 7 clash will also see him come up against someone else born in his home city of Graz in the form of Wolfsburg coach Ralph Hasenhüttl. VfL, like, Werder are still without a home win this season and are searching for their best form in front of their own fans. Schmid, however, was quick to warn SVW about their upcoming opponents. “They have a lot of individual quality and I think they’re slowly starting to really get to grips with their new system under Hasenhüttl. They will be a tough team to face.” Looking back at the Hoffenheim game in particular, where SVW were 3-0 down after around a quarter of an hour, Schmid wants his team to be “focused and at their best” from the very first whistle. Werder’s threat in front of goal is also important, according to the Austrian. “We simply need to be more dangerous and win more set pieces. I also perhaps need to take more shots and get into more dangerous areas of the pitch.”
