A host of Werder players are currently on international duty with their national sides. Milos Veljkovic is missing from Serbia’s squad due to foot problems and is undergoing medical examinations with the team doctor. Romano Schmid, Marco Grüll, Keke Topp, Mio Backhaus and Isak Hansen-Aarøen have already been involved in fixtures over the past few days.

Two Bremen players, Romano Schmid and Marco Grüll, faced the task of an opening Nations League match against Slovenia in what was Austria’s first game since being knocked out of the European Championship in the round of 16 against Turkey. While Schmid made the starting line-up, Grüll was only selected for the bench. In the end, the game finished 1-1. Due to another draw between Norway and Kazakhstan, Austria missed out on temporarily topping Group 3 in League B. While Schmid was substituted in the 82nd minute, Grüll did not feature. Next Monday, 09/09/2024, Austria will take on Norway in Oslo (kick-off 20:45 CEST).

Germany’s European U21Championship qualifier saw Keke Topp make his international debut at this level, during the match against Israel on Wednesday evening. Former Werder striker Nick Woltemade was also selected. Topp came on as a substitute in the 71st minute and provided the assist for the final goal to make it 5-1 shortly before the end. The U21s will next face Estonia on Tuesday, 10/09/2024 (kick-off 18:00 CEST). With a win, the team would have a good chance of qualifying for the tournament finals in Slovakia.

Both Backhaus and Hansen-Aarøen are on the winning side

Mio Backhaus started in goal for the Germany U20 national side against Romania on Thursday evening. After trailing 2-0, his team managed to turn the game around, ultimately securing a 3-2 victory. Their next match-up takes place in Rieti, where they will face Italy on Tuesday, 10/09/2024 (kick-off 16:00 CEST).

Isak Hansen-Aarøen was also in action with the Norway U21s in their European Championship qualifier against Latvia. The Werder man started and played 74 minutes of his country’s 1-0 victory before he was substituted. The win against Latvia moves Norway onto 15 points and up to third in Group A. Hansen-Aarøen and the U21s will next take on Italy on Tuesday, 10/09/2024 (kick-off 18:30 CEST).
