SV Werder Bremen came away from their first home game of the season with a point after their encounter with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday afternoon ended goalless. The Green-Whites were particularly frustrated with the result due to their numerical advantage in the closing stages, which could have allowed them to claim all three points from the clash. WERDER.DE have summarised the reaction to the draw.

Head coach Ole Werner: “We couldn’t have played much better today against such a strong opponent. We did enough to win against a team like Dortmund, particularly when defending during long periods of possession. We didn’t step up to the plate in the decisive moments and played poorly with the numerical advantage. We weren’t patient enough, failed to apply enough pressure, and didn’t stretch the pitch enough. It’s frustrating that we played well, but didn’t use that to our advantage. We put in a good performance, and two more points could have definitely been on the cards.”

Marco Friedl: “We performed really well throughout the entire 90 minutes. Our weakest phase was after they went down to ten men, but we had many chances prior to that. I’m not entirely satisfied with the point for that reason. Dortmund created a lot of danger from set pieces and we did well defensively to counteract that. We had a long summer break with a few friendlies away from home, and were finally able to play in front of our fans again today.”

Marvin Ducksch: “If you consider the game as a whole, I’m not completely satisfied with the result. We could have come away with more today. We didn’t allow them to have any clear-cut chances and defended really well. We also won the ball back well a number of times and had the opportunity to get through on goal. We unfortunately didn’t use the numerical advantage as well as we should have in order to win the game. We needed to take a few more risks against a top team like Borussia Dortmund.”

Mitchell Weiser: “It has to be said that the point was not enough. We created the better chances throughout the game, even when both teams had eleven men on the pitch. Dortmund obviously have the quality to create danger with every attack, but we did really well defensively and only allowed them through from one or two set pieces. We let our chances slip away too easily, despite the fact that none of them were 100 percent there for the taking.”

Romano Schmid: “We’ve made a huge amount of progress in the last year and proved today that we can perform well against a top side. We struggled to create anything from our chances after their red card. We have to critically reflect on the fact that we played worse with the numerical advantage than we did when they had eleven men on the pitch. We dominated the game before their player was sent off and would've deserved to have come away with all three points.”

We then became a bit too hectic, because we wanted the win so badly.

Justin Njinmah: “It’s obviously special to play against your former club. I’m probably slightly more upset with the point than the others for that reason, because I wanted to win more than anything. We created some good chances, our press was successful, and we got ourselves into a situation where we had the advantage, but didn’t capitalise on it. We're capable of performing better than we did in the closing stages today.”

Keke Topp: “It’s a shame that we didn’t win today. The team were constantly dealing with the pressure and deserved the three points. We then became a bit too hectic, because we wanted the win so badly. We’ll analyse the game and put in a better performance against Mainz.”
