For the first time this season, SV Werder are preparing for action in the prime time Saturday evening slot in the Bundesliga, with the floodlights set to light up the Weserstadion. Head coach Ole Werner’s side welcome reigning German champions Bayer Leverkusen on 26/10/24 (kick-off 18:30 CEST). In his press conference ahead of the clash, Werner spoke about the special circumstances of the meeting and whether his team can translate their away form onto a match in front of the home fans against Xabi Alonso’s high-quality side.

Not only are the Green-Whites preparing to welcome last season's double winners from Leverkusen to the Weserstadion, but it will also be their first match this term to take place at the primetime slot on a Saturday evening. The team are hoping to send their fans home in a celebratory mood, as Werner explained. "I hope that we will be able to give people reason to celebrate at the Freimarkt afterwards. Floodlight games are always something special here, as you can feel a different sort of energy inside the stadium. We're really looking forward to playing under the lights for the first time this season at home."

Werder's last game to take place in the evening saw them return home with a 4-2 win in hand from Wolfsburg on Sunday. Marvin Ducksch contributed a goal and two assists, while new signing Marco Grüll managed to net his first goal for Werder and in the Bundesliga. Asked whether this was a sign of the so-called 'ketchup bottle effect,' Werner said, "For me, it's important that we are successful as a team. This doesn't just concern the goals that our strikers score, but also includes many other things. Namely, that we remember our tactics and that the lads stick to all the basics. If that all goes well, then everything else falls into place, and the positives seem to come on their own."

Be a step further

Taking the momentum from Werder's strong away form this season, as well as last weekend's win against Wolfsburg, into Saturday's game against the Werkself will be a tough task. After all, "not much has changed in terms of their quality or their style of play from last season's title-winning campaign," said Werner. He added that his side aren't without a chance, however: "If we manage to show on Saturday that we're further along in our own development, regardless of who our opponents are. And, if we manage to be more efficient and defend with consistency across the full 90 minutes."

Niklas Stark. Skelly Alvero and Jens Stage will all be unavailable this weekend, as they continue to work their way back to full fitness. "We're checking in on their progress every week. It's not certain yet whether they'll be back next week, but it also can't be ruled out. We're hoping that at least one of them will be ready to return next week, but it could also be the case that they require more time," Werner said.
