Werder’s first friendly ahead of the 2024/25 season ended in a comfortable 2-0 win. Oliver Burke put the Green-Whites ahead almost immediately in the second minute. In the second half, Keke Topp marked his debut for SVW with his first goal for the club.

First-half highlights:

2nd minute: That was quick! After being played in by Marvin Ducksch, the returning Oliver Burke keeps his cool to slot past Verden goalkeeper Jascha Tiemann and give SV Werder the lead.

9th minute: Verden’s Nils Koehle gets on the end of a kick from goalkeeper Jascha Tiemann and tries to beat Mio Backhaus with an ambitious effort from rage. His strike goes narrowly over.

20th minute: Anthony Jung lets fly from around 25 yards, but his low effort is wide of goal.

26th minute: Verden start to get more and more into the game. Mathis Meyer picks up a pass from Phil Sarrasch in a good position but shoots wide.

30th minute: Werder smash the crossbar twice in quick succession! Mitchell Weiser gets his head to a corner, but he agonisingly hits the woodwork, as does Dikeni Salifou on the follow-up. Salifou was in an offside position anyway though.

37th minute: Former Werder man Marcel Hilßner tries his luck from around 50 yards out. Mio Backhaus is on his guard and easily collects the ball.

Second-half highlights:

52nd minute: The hosts record the first effort on goal of the second period. Brandes fires straight at Kolke from a tight angle, and the goalkeeper saves comfortably.

59th minute: So nearly 2-0! Senne Lynen plays the ball through to new signing Keke Topp, who calmly slots past Tiemann. However, the flag was up for offside before the ball had even crossed the line.

65th minute: This one does count, and it’s a debut goal for our new signing! Dawid Kownacki lays it into the path of Topp, who strikes a low shot into the bottom corner.

90th minute: The referee blows for full time.

Summary: Goals from the returning Oliver Burke and new signing Keke Topp earned Werder a 2-0 win over a Verden side who only occasionally threatened. SVW were the dominant side throughout the game, though they were missing a bit of composure in the final third. The Green-Whites will next take on US Lecce at the Parkstadion in Zell am Ziller on Saturday, 20th July at 15:00 CEST.
