SV Werder were able to celebrate their first league win of the season away in Mainz on Sunday evening. Marvin Ducksch put the Green-Whites ahead from the spot (7’), before FSV were able to equalise after an unfortunate miscommunication between Zetterer and Stark (27’). Despite Marco Friedl being sent off (60’), the Green-Whites never gave up hope and saw their efforts rewarded. Substitute Derrick Köhn scored just 125 seconds after coming on for his competitive debut (69’) to put Werder 2-1 up and secure their first win this Bundesliga season.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Ole Werner sent out an unchanged line-up after a 0-0 draw against Borussia Dortmund last time out. New signing Derrick Köhn was part of the matchday squad for the first time in the Bundesliga.

Werder's starting line-up: Zetterer - Jung, Stark, Stage, Ducksch, Weiser, Njinmah, Lynen, Schmid, Agu und Friedl.

Bench: Backhaus - Deman, Pieper, Bittencourt, Grüll, Köhn, Hansen-Aarøen, Malatini, Alvero und Topp.

Ducksch opens the scoring from the spot

First-half highlights:

6th minute: Weiser is able to find space on the right and get off a shot, but it's parried by Zentner. Lynen is able to get to the rebound, but his attempt is cleared.

8th minute: Njinmah is brought down inside the box, as Ducksch steps up to take the penalty. He places the ball into the top right corner, beating Zentner with a powerful shot. It’s the third straight game that Werder's number 7 has opened the scoring against Mainz.

12th minute: A moment of danger from the hosts, as Nadiem Amiri rattles the crossbar with a shot from range.

25th minute: Ducksch delivers an in-swinging corner from the right that’s flicked on by Grüll. His header only just misses the far post.

27th minute: The hosts equalise. Zetterer comes out to pluck a high cross out of the air, but collides with Stark. The goalkeeper is unable to keep hold of the ball, allowing Lee to level things up into an empty net.

40th minute: Another chance for Werder. Grüll beats his man and drives towards the goal. His cross flies across the face of goal where Weiser only narrowly misses getting on the end of it.

Dream debut secures all three points

Second-half highlights:

49th minute: Zetterer is on hand to deny Lee’s header following a corner. The ball remains in play and the goalkeeper soon makes another big save at the back post to prevent Hong from getting on the scoresheet.

58th minute: Caci attempts to catch Zetterer off his line with a looping header, but the goalkeeper is able to push it over the bar.

60th minute: Werder will play the final 30 minutes with ten men, after Friedl is shown a controversial straight red. The SVW captain slid in to stop Mainz’s Burkhardt from breaking through on goal, with the referee deeming it a professional foul.

65th minute: So close to retaking the lead! Schmid sends Ducksch through on goal, as he takes aim from a tight angle. His shot only narrowly goes wide of the right post.

70th minute: WERDER LEAD AGAIN! A dream competitive debut for Köhn, as the substitute finds the back of the net just 125 seconds after coming on. He gets on the end of a pass from Schmid and beats Zentner to slot home Werder’s second of the night.

74th minute: Zentner comes out to clear the ball, but his timing is off, allowing Schmid to take aim and attempt to catch him off guard with a chipped effort. But, Jenz is able to get back in time to keep the ball from going into an empty net.

90th minute +4: Another huge save from Zetterer! Sieb is able to get a shot off from just inside the box, as the goalkeeper dives to prevent it from going in at the left post.

90th minute +6: Full time. The three points are heading home with SVW after a 2-1 win in Mainz!

Summary: SV Werder were able to take all three points after a 2-1 win in Mainz, despite finding themselves a man down for the final 30 minutes. The visitors were able to go ahead early on, but saw their lead cancelled out by a miscommunication at the back. A controversial red card for Friedl didn’t keep Werder from continuing to carve out chances for themselves. Substitute Köhn crowned his competitive debut with a dangerous counter-attack late on, earning Werner their first win of the Bundesliga season.
