SV Werder Bremen prepare to host the reigning champions from Leverkusen on Saturday evening (18:30 CEST). The Green-Whites will go in search of their first home win of the season, with head coach Ole Werner hoping to see “signs of improvement” from his team.

Team news: Jens Stage (bruised calf), Skelly Alvero (knee problems) and Niklas Stark (muscle issues) are all unavailable for this weekend’s clash against the Werkself. “We’re taking it week by week,” said head coach Ole Werner. “It’s not certain whether they will be able to return next week, but the possibility is there.” Justin Njinmah and Milos Veljkovic could return from off the bench on the weekend before making their full return during the upcoming double game week.

Ole Werner on the opponent: “Looking at the goals they’ve conceded, you’re able to come to the conclusion that they can be beaten. But, they play the same style and have the same qualities and we would do well to focus on ourselves. Last season there were moments in which we did well. But, in the end, we gave them too much space and weren't focused enough in attack. I hope to see signs that we are further along in our development as a team on Saturday."

Overdue for a win

Recent meetings: The Green-Whites are long overdue for a win against Leverkusen, and are without a win in their last eight meetings against the Werkself. Werder’s last win in this match-up dates back to March 2019, as goals from Max Kruse (2) and Milot Rashica secured a 3-1 victory. Last season, Xabi Alonso’s side won both meetings against SVW without conceding, as they were also crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time after a 5-0 victory on matchday 29

Rock at the back: During the press conference ahead of the game, Werner spoke about how Michael Zetterer is an important part of how his side play. According to data collated by 1vs1, SV Werder have completed the third most passes from their own final third, as well as inside their opponent’s penalty box. This could prove key to breaking down Leverkusen’s press and generating a threat on goal.
