Having only joined the Green-Whites a week ago, Derrick Köhn has already made his Werder debut on Thursday (05.09) when he started against Preußen Münster in a friendly on Thursday. In addition, it only took seven minutes for the 25-year-old to receive the congratulations of his teammates after he set up SVW’s opening goal, his first assist for the club.

The Hamburg-born midfielder has settled in on his return to Germany from Turkey almost as quickly as his deadline-day loan deal to SV Werder got over the line. Both in team training and during his first appearance in the Preußen Münster friendly, Werder’s new number 19 has impressed with his razor-sharp acceleration, sprightliness and constant scanning.

A prime example of this was in the seventh minute of the friendly. Köhn used his speed, which he himself described as one of his strengths, to drive into the penalty box, before using his vision to pick out Justin Njinmah, who fired home to make it 1-0 to SVW. It was a perfect move and a perfect start to his Werder career. “It was a good pass to Justin and a really good feeling personally. I hope it continues,” rejoiced Köhn.

No teething problems

Köhn and Njinmah appear to have clicked instantly, but the connection with his fellow teammate from Hamburg is not in isolation, as Köhn explains: “In general, I have to say that the team is great and has taken to me really well. Everyone’s really helping me on the pitch, and you could see glimpses of what we’ve been working on in training in the first game. On the whole, I feel very comfortable here.”

Even if the final result ended 3-2 to Preußen Münster, Köhn certainly made a memorable first impression, as Werder’s head of professional football Peter Niemeyer commented: “I’m pleased Derrick’s got going straightaway by getting an assist. His effort is certainly evident, particularly concerning his deep runs in behind. That’s what we expect of him, and so we hope that he pushes on in the coming weeks.”
