Having previously extended his contract at SV Werder Bremen over the summer, 18-year-old centre-back Mats Heitmann has now put pen to paper on his first professional contract.
“Mats has performed well in the past and during pre-season before his injury. We believe he is capable of one day featuring in the Bundesliga, although it is still a long way to go before then,” said Peter Niemeyer.
“I’m delighted that Werder have underlined their trust in me, especially given the current situation. Signing your first professional contract is a dream come true for any young footballer. Right now, I’m focused on getting back to full fitness and on continuing to work hard to improve, so that I might one day play for the club at the Weserstadion,” said Heitmann.
Mats Heitmann joined SV Werder in 2018 from Blau-Weiß Lohne. Last season, he was able to feature for the club’s U23s and played the full 90 minutes of their opening match of the season against TSV Havelse. Heitmann was also included in the first-team squad for some pre-season friendlies. The defender suffered a serious knee injury in early August and has since been working on his comeback.
