He gave the fans reason to dream during Werder’s 125th anniversary celebrations. Now he’s making that dream come true. Diego will return to Weserstadion in March 2025, ready to don the Green-Whites’ colours once again. On Saturday, 22nd March 2025, Bremen will play host for the official testimonial match of Werder’s former number 10.

“Werder and Bremen have always been so special for me. I had three great years here. I owe so much to the club and the fans for the simply incredible time that I had here, where I felt so loved. For me, this testimonial match will bring this chapter of my life to a close and I’m so happy that I can play it in front of these fans and in this stadium once again,” said the overjoyed Brazilian.

The now 39-year-old made 132 appearances for Werder across the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, Europa League and Champions League, scoring 54 goals in the process. He netted the unforgettable Goal of the Year for 2007, scoring from over 60 metres against Alemannia Aachen to make it 3-1! “That was the best goal of my career. Perhaps I can repeat the trick in March, if my teammates and opponents give me the chance,” joked Werder’s 2009 DFB-Pokal winner.

For one final 90 minutes, the fans will get a chance to sit back, watch, and reminisce. Diego will put together a Werder XI and World XI to go head-to-head. “The invitations have been sent. I hope to see as many former teammates at the stadium as possible to make the day a really memorable one for me,” said Diego.

Any fans eager not to miss what will certainly be a special occasion can secure the first tickets from today, Wednesday 20/11/2024.
