As the travelling Werder fans celebrate widely, Oliver Burke runs towards them with his arms stretched out wide in a triumphant pose. Moments before, the Scot had slotted home the winning goal away at VfB Stuttgart (2-1), extending the Green-Whites’ winning run to three straight matches. The striker had also just notched his first ever brace in the Bundesliga, continuing his strong run of form at the minute.

The weekend before, Burke put Werder on the path to victory with his header against Eintracht Frankfurt. The Scot has been able to build up his confidence over the last weeks, something that served him well against VfB. “I wasn’t happy with how I started into the game,” he said afterwards. “I’m feeling very confident at the minute and that goal only added to it — I’m very happy for the team.”

The 28-year-old worked hard during the win, covering an impressive 11.03 kilometres while also being clocked at just over 35 km/h. “If you’re able to score twice and cover that much ground as a striker, then it’s a sign that you’ve put in a great performance,” head coach Ole Werner praised during the post-match press conference. “Having him start in that position is also very important for the team and there’s no one in the team that isn’t delighted for him.”

For weeks, Werner has been saying that the extra effort the striker has been putting in is now being rewarded. “The club believed in me and my teammates also helped me a lot,” said Burke. “As you can see, I’m very happy at the moment.”
