After the 2-1 win at 1. FSV Mainz 05 last Sunday, SV Werder have spent this week preparing for their second home game of the season. FC Bayern are the visitors on Saturday afternoon (21/9/24) for a 15:30 kick off. SVW showed last season that they can beat the Bavarians and will be hoping to do so again this weekend.

The squad: Captain Marco Friedl is suspended after his red card in the win at 1. FSV Mainz 05. Milos Veljkovic (ankle issue) and Justin Njinmah (ankle ligament damage) are also unavailable.

Ole Werner on the opponents: “Bayern are tough to defend against and they have a clear vision. That is a result of the coach. It just shows they’re in good form and that they have lots of quality in every position. We want to focus on ourselves and play as best we can. The lads know what to do.”

Previous meetings: The away game in January 2024 against FC Bayern was a special one for SVW. After Justin Njinmah had a goal ruled out in the first half, Mitchell Weiser scored the winner after the break (59’) to secure Werder’s first win over the record German champions in over 15 years. SV Werder Bremen against FC Bayern is actually the most-played fixture in the history of the Bundesliga, with the two teams doing battle 114 times in the top flight so far. Werder have won 27 of these meetings, while the points have been shared 26 times.

Most-played fixture in Bundesliga history

Almost like the olden days: Back in the day, SVW against FC Bayern often used to be a clash between two of the league’s best teams. Werder are currently undefeated since the loss at Bayer Leverkusen in April 2024, with only RB Leipzig presently on a longer unbeaten run in the division. FC Bayern, meanwhile, are top of the table for the first time in 2024 after winning their first three league games of the season under new coach Vincent Kompany, something last managed at the club six years ago by Niko Kovac.
