How time flies! Felix Agu is about to begin his fifth season at Werder Bremen and has certainly experienced a lot in his time at the Green-Whites, including a relegation and a promotion. The full-back has also had to battle with injury issues, but the 24-year-old has always knuckled down and didn’t miss a single Werder game last season from matchday 12. In this interview, the Osnabrück-born defender looks back at his time at Werder and ahead to the upcoming season.

WERDER.DE: Hi Felix! First of all, congratulations on your contract extension. How pleased are you to have gained clarity about your future by signing a deal ahead of time?

Felix Agu: "I’m really pleased we were able to get it sorted and to have signed this contract extension. It’s just great to go into the new season with a clear head and to be able to focus on my game, so that I can give my best on the pitch.”

WERDER.DE: There was certainly a lot of talk in the media about external interest in you as a player. What was the deciding factor that made you stay at Werder?

Felix Agu: “I simply thought that I’ll be able to keep developing nicely as a player here. Working in a pleasant environment day in, day out, and being part of a good team with great coaches. I think I’m still improving as a player; there’s still more to come from me, and so I hope to achieve that here in the future.”

WERDER.DE: You’re going into your fifth season as a Werder player. When you look back at your past years in Bremen, how do you feel?

Felix Agu: “I look back with mixed emotions, because it’s been very up and down - for me personally as well. We got relegated in my first season and then came straight back up the year after. I basically spent the entirety of my third season and the start of my fourth season injured, but then I came back last year and as a team, we had a good second half to the season. Overall it’s been a very eventful, but also a very pleasant time.”

Taking the next steps

WERDER.DE: Does any moment during this time stand out in particular for you?

Felix Agu: “The promotion was certainly a highlight. Given what happened in the city that day, with all the fans on the Osterdeich, it was absolutely immense to drive along past them on the bus. I would also say our victory over Bayern in the second half of last season. This was a personal highlight for me, because I came back from injury and then played a part in such an important game. Games like that demonstrate why you play football.”

WERDER.DE: How tough was it for you to get back to full fitness after a long period on the sidelines?

Felix Agu: “The toughest part of it all was before the operation, when it was still unclear as to how it was all going to go. Once I knew I was going to return to full health, I was very assured and also had trust in my own ability to get back to 100% again. Now, I’m pleased to be taking the next step in my development, and I hope to remain injury-free.”

WERDER.DE: Let’s look ahead to the start of the training camp in Zillertal. How pleased are you to be completing an entire pre-season period?

Felix Agu: “I couldn’t go last year because of my injury. One reason why the training camp is great is because you can chill out with the lads every day, which is certainly very fun, and we get to spend the odd evening together. On the other hand, it’ll also be a really intense camp, so maybe I’ll be using my free time for the odd nap.”

WERDER.DE: Finally, what are your personal goals for the new season?

Felix Agu: “I’d certainly like to build on my performances and constantly be improving. Naturally, I’d like to stay injury-free and enjoy my time playing on the pitch with the team. I believe that we always perform well when we’ve been enjoying ourselves on the pitch.”

WERDER.DE: We wish you the best of luck with that, Felix, and it’s great that you’re staying a Werder player!
