Werder Bremen have shown real consistency across their 15 games so far in 2024/25. The reward is an impressive 25 points, leaving Ole Werner’s side seventh in the Bundesliga table over the Christmas break, while a DFB-Pokal quarter-final also awaits the Green-Whites in the new year. WERDER.DE takes a look at the numbers, stats and facts from the season so far and sees how SVW stack up against the competition.

On the ball: SV Werder have had an average of 49.9 percent possession, putting them ninth in the division. Unsurprisingly, league leaders Bayern dominate in this area (67%), while last-placed VfL Bochum see the ball the least often (42.3%). The Green-Whites are also very tidy in possession, finding a teammate with 84.2 percent of their passes (7th). The Bundesliga table is again reflected in these statistics, with FCB leading the way (90.9%) and Bochum trailing the pack (76.3%).

Aerial strength: Marco Grüll’s opener in the 4-1 win over 1. FC Union Berlin put Werder on top of the Bundesliga standings, as Werder’s tally of eight headed goals this season is only matched by Borussia Mönchengladbach. Ole Werner’s side’s aerial strength also helps them defensively, having let in just one goal from a header – a league low together with the Foals and Bayern München. However, SVW’s tally of 10 goals from crosses is an outright league best.

Set pieces: Dead balls can often be an effective way of swinging a game in your favour, and VfL Wolfsburg have had the most joy in this department, scoring 10 times from set plays. SVW have managed just three goals in comparison: one penalty and two corners. That means that 88.5% of Werder’s goals have come from open play, with only FC St. Pauli less reliable on set pieces, having not yet scored from any.

Werder fans in second place

Playing the percentages: Despite having the eighth best attack in the league, Werder haven’t gone out all guns blazing. Ole Werner’s men have taken just 173 shots so far, the fourth fewest in the division. It’s SVW’s determination to get into promising positions that has helped them be so clinical, meaning they have had the fewest attempts from outside the box of all Bundesliga sides this term (44). Nevertheless, they have scored twice from distance, thanks to Romano Schmid against Leverkusen and Jens Stage against Kiel.

The number 12: Only FC Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund and SV Werder Bremen have had a 100 percent stadium capacity at home games according to data from “Falsche 9”. With an average of 5,063 travelling fans belying the long journeys and many Sunday games, the Green-Whites trail only Mönchengladbach (5,100) in terms of away support, even beating out Bayern (4,913) and Dortmund (4,829). The Foals just edged ahead of Werder on the final matchday before Christmas by taking over 10,000 fans to their away game at Hoffenheim. SVW’s best turnout on the road came in Wolfsburg, where 7,000 fans cheered on Ole Werner’s boys.
