Werder Bremen secured a 3-1 win over VfB Oldenburg in their second friendly of the pre-season. Justin Njinmah (23’) gave the Green-Whites the lead, before Max Wegner (33’) levelled for the fourth tier side. Ole Werner made wholesale changes at the break and his men took full control of the contest thanks to quick-fire goals from Dawid Kownacki (62’) and Manuel Mbom (64’).

Line-up and formation: The head coach played different line-ups in each half in order to give the squad a full workout. He opted for a three-man backline with two strikers at the top.

First half: Zetterer (GK), Jung, Füllkrug, Njinmah, Schmid, Rapp (42' Salifou), Burke, Gruev, Woltemade, Friedl (C), Groß.

Second half: Dos Santos Haesler (GK) Stark, Pieper, Ducksch, Kownacki, Bittencourt (C), Salifou, Schmidt, Buchanan, Mbom, Opitz.

First half highlights:

13': Woltemade has his back to goal and lays the ball back to Schmid on the edge of the area. The Austrian pulls the trigger and narrowly misses the target.

16': The best chance of the contest so far! Schmid fires a low shot towards goal after a good combination with Füllkrug but Mielitz gets down well to palm it away. Woltemade is there for the rebound but the keeper responds once more.

23': Werder take the lead! Jung dinks in a superb cross from the left and Njinmah is there to head it home. 1-0!

33': Oldenburg level! Wegner stabs home a Knystock cross from close range. 1-1!

Kownacki and Mbom strike

Second half highlights:

50': Opitz wins the ball high up the pitch and Kownacki tries his luck from a tight angle but can’t find the target.

62': Goal for Werder! Bittencourt puts Kownacki through on goal and the new signing slots it past the keeper to put his side 2-1 ahead!

64': Ducksch plays a superb first-time pass from deep through to Kownacki and the Pole squares it to Mbom. The number 34 cuts inside and smartly finishes to make to 3-1.

84': Bittencourt finds himself through on goal but he can’t beat the keeper from close range.

90+1: FULL TIME: The referee blows his whistle! Werder secure a comfortable 3-1 win over VfB Oldenburg.

Summary: The Green-Whites eventually took control of the contest after a tight first half. Despite their solid performance, the quick-fire double from Dawid Kownacki and Manuel Mbom eventually knocked the stuffing out of VfB Oldenburg, who can take pride in their performance against the Bundesliga side.
