A look back on the 23/24 season: part III: Away days and anniversary celebrations

After finishing the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign in ninth place, SV Werder Bremen narrowly missed out on a spot in Europe. However, now that the summer break has begun, the Green-Whites can focus on the positives and take a look back at everything they achieved in the season just gone. After the first part of our review of the season looked at our headers and crossing and the second part at players who opened their accounts for the club, we now take a look at the support from the fans in the stands.

Away days

SVW supporters set out in the season just gone to turn away games into home games and drive on the players on the pitch with their support. And this paid off – our twelfth man was able to celebrate four wins on the road, including the already-legendary 1-0 victory in Munich, helping to give Werder the league’s ninth-best away record with 17 points. The Green-Whites also have the league’s third-highest average away following of 4,726, behind only VfB Stuttgart (5,547) and Borussia Dortmund (4,900)!

A few flags flapping in the breeze is never good enough for the Werder faithful, who once again dazzled us with their elaborate coordinated displays in the stands. Even on the other side of the country, Bremen fans in the Augsburg away end created an incredible choreographed image of the Bremen Roland holding the Werder crest on his shield. Werder fans also used these displays to highlight issues off the pitch. At December’s home game against Leipzig, fans paid tribute to Inbar Heiman, who was killed in the October 7th attacks in the Middle East. Another touching tribute could be seen against Stuttgart, when fans commemorated ‘Kiste,’ a recently-deceased St. Pauli ultra.

Anniversary celebrations

Of course, the main talking point from this season was the club’s 125th anniversary, and it was only fitting that the Green-Whites reached another milestone during the campaign with their 2000th Bundesliga fixture. To celebrate Werder’s landmark birthday, the entire crowd at February’s clash with Heidenheim was dressed in green and white. Despite a 2-1 loss threatening to put a damper on proceedings, the match will always be remembered for its goosebump-inducing carnival atmosphere. Indeed, the scenes that day were reminiscent of 2004, and another significant day in the club’s history. In May, the 20th anniversary of Werder’s Double win was marked by frenetic pre-match celebrations ahead of the final game of the season. Fan favourites such as Ailton and Micoud made an appearance to the delight of the home fans, who responded with yet another impeccably choreographed display in the east stand.
