Although SV Werder Bremen battled hard to share the spoils with fourth-place side RB Leipzig on matchday 33, a number of the Green-Whites couldn’t help but think that all three points were very much on the cards. SVW put in a strong display against RBL, particularly in the first half, but were unable to defeat Leipzig on this occasion. WERDER.DE were in the mixed zone after the game to gather the reaction to the draw.

Head coach Ole Werner: “We have to give the boys the credit they deserve for the performance they delivered in the first half, which was almost perfect by our standards. If I’m being really picky, there were potentially one or two occasions where we could have done better. Leipzig then took charge after the break. We proceeded to create chances going forward, which we’re frustrated amounted to nothing, even if the draw was ultimately a fair result. The players and team as a whole have developed really well.”

Marco Friedl: “We put in a virtually perfect performance in the first half, and we were clearly the stronger side. Looking back on the 20 minutes after the break, we were lucky to not have conceded earlier. Nevertheless, we created better chances going forward, so it’s tough to be completely satisfied with the number of points we picked up today. When we push ourselves to the limit, we’re a great team. We proved that in our last few games and will need to implement that into the new season.”

Leonardo Bittencourt: “There was definitely more in it for us today. Our first-half performance was almost perfect – we went 1-0 up, won our battles, and took control of the game. It then became clear that Leipzig changed things around after the break and took things up a notch. We definitely noticed that. Even though it was a week ago now, I’m still feeling frustrated about the result against Gladbach. However, I’m proud of the fact that we’re now on a four-game unbeaten run. We should continue to focus on that, even though we haven’t been able to pick up all three points in our last few games. I’m really enjoying the style of football we’re playing at the moment.”

Marvin Ducksch: “I’m still disappointed, even though we picked up a point, as we could’ve gone that step further. We had a very strong game plan and implemented everything that we had set out to. We could have even bagged another goal in the first half. However, we lacked the necessary assertiveness going forward in the second half to build on our lead. Nevertheless, we should be proud of our performance today.”

Michael Zetterer: “It’s a real shame that we were only able to come away with a point today, as all three were definitely on the cards. We aimed to dictate the pace of the game and prevent it from becoming frantic, which they could have used to their advantage. We had a lot of quality in possession, but the final pass was lacking on one or two occasions. We should be proud of how we handled things today.”

“It does still hurt, though, as more could’ve been in it for us today”

Nick Woltemade: “It made sense that Leipzig piled on the pressure in the second half. They are, without a doubt, one of the best teams in the league. It was frustrating that nothing came of our chances in the closing stages. However, our performance and the bravery we showed today indicate that we’re on the right track. After playing my final away game for Werder, I’m now really looking forward to the last home match in front of the fans.”

Mitchell Weiser: “Both sides were at a similar standard today, and we were the ones to control the first half. Leipzig made some changes at half time, which prevented us from finding success in the areas that we did before the break. We still managed to create two or three chances going forward. We should be proud of the way we played here. It does still hurt, though, as more could’ve been in it for us today.”
