Reaction to the late defeat to Hoffenheim

It was a bitter Saturday evening for SV Werder. After a poor first half at home to TSG Hoffenheim, the Green-Whites fought back in the second half and created countless chances in the final minutes, which resulted in Jens Stage scoring the team’s second equaliser of the game. The Werder celebrations were short-lived, however, as Marius Bülter secured a 3-2 win for Hoffenheim less than two minutes later. The general consensus from the hosts after the game was that it “simply cannot happen”. We’ve rounded up the reaction to the defeat.

Marco Friedl: “It wasn’t a good first half, but we were still only 2-1 down and everything was possible. We played well after the break, were the better team and deserved our equaliser. Then we were just dumb. We simply cannot allow them to score again. There are a few things that we’re doing wrong at decisive moments. We won’t pick up any points if that carries on. We have to clear our heads. When our backs are up against the wall, we start to play football and can cause problems to any opponent. We need to be able to produce that from the first minute.”

Marvin Ducksch: “I can’t explain why we delivered yet another first-half performance like that. It felt like we lost every challenge. We were always second to the ball, nothing fell for us and there were gaps everywhere. We talked about all those issues at half time and we showed a very good reaction in the second 45. Everyone who came on brought energy to the pitch, then we finally got the equaliser we deserved. You have to see out the 2-2 though. I think that we were too greedy. Everyone sensed that we could get even more from the game, and we completely lost our organisation. Barely a minute had passed since the equaliser and we shoot ourselves in the foot. That simply cannot happen.”

Ole Werner: It’s just incredible frustrating and disappointing because the team did all they could to get a result today and put in a real courageous performance. We didn’t have a very good first half; we were gutless in possession and too passive defensively. We changed some things at half time and were much better after that. The quality was there to see too, we just couldn’t quite get our reward. Then, when you finally do like we did to make it 2-2, you cannot allow yourself to make the mistake of leaving a free man on the edge of the box from a throw-in when you have the numbers back. Playing well for 45 minutes isn’t good enough. It’s not necessarily about their third goal, it’s about having to play well for 90 minutes and not being asleep for the first half.”

Jens Stage: "We have to be picking up a point there. We put in a decent performance, better than last week in Darmstadt, but that doesn’t help us when we don’t get any points.”

Romano Schmid: “We had a good first three minutes, then I can’t explain how we’ve ended up conceding another early goal. The goals we’re letting in are too soft, which is incredibly frustrating. We showed once again though that we are a team. We came back, but it simply cannot be the case that, with the way the game had played out and with the fans behind us here at home, we go on and concede a third.”
