On what should have been a day of celebrations for the 125-year anniversary of the club, SV Werder Bremen were unable to rejoice over their 2-1 loss to 1. FC Heidenheim on Saturday afternoon. WERDER.DE were in the mixed zone after the game and have summarised the Green-Whites’ reactions to the defeat.

Head coach Ole Werner: “In the first half, we let Heidenheim have too much of the ball, which spurred them on. We allowed them success in set pieces on too many occassions, and although we found space to play in the final third, we couldn’t create any clear-cut chances. It was better for us in the second half, but we didn’t use our chances anywhere near as well as we have been over the past few weeks. We had the opportunity to come away with at least a point, which we ultimately would have deserved.”

Marco Friedl: “That was a completely unnecessary defeat. We should have taken the lead three minutes in, which would have changed the course of the game. We conceded two goals in the space of ten minutes, after which we immediately got one back. There were obviously periods where we were a little unsteady, but from then on we had the game under control until the last minute. We were the better team and should have come away with at least a point. It's our own fault that we didn’t come out on top today."

Romano Schmid: We were on a roll and were aiming to keep it going. That hurts. Luck wasn’t on our side today, as the opportunities for us to come out on top were there. In regards to my goal, I've been doing my best this season to get into the box more, and today it paid off. The atmosphere was unbelievable; I even had goosebumps during the warm-up. We wanted to reward the fans with a win, which could’ve been possible today considering the way the game went.”

Jens Stage: “We knew that Heidenheim would be a tough opponent to come up against. Our performance was okay, but we made too many mistakes. If we can defend better in these situations and make the most of our chances, then we’ll be able to win the game. It was great to play in front of the fans here. We wanted to win three, or at least one point, but we couldn’t do that today.”

Justin Njinmah: “We’re all feeling upset, as we wanted to continue our unbeaten streak. We fell short in the first half. We knew that they would create danger through set pieces, so we practiced defending against them in training. We knew what we were in for, but only changed our approach towards the end of the first half.”
