SV Werder Bremen's first home fixture of 2024 saw them pick up all three points in a 3-1 win over SC Freiburg. This was the Green-Whites’ second consecutive win, something which they never would have fathomed in the first-half of the season. Julian Malatini made his dream debut and Michael Zetterer stood between the sticks on his ninth anniversary of signing for the club. Today was “just unreal” in the words of Justin Njinmah. Head coach Ole Werner is still of the opinion, however, that “every game comes down to fine margins and we have to remain disciplined.” WERDER.DE have summarised the reaction to the win.

Michael Zetterer: I think we can all be proud of ourselves after that performance. We had a hard time getting anywhere at certain points in the first half, but came out after the break full of confidence.

Marco Friedl: Every win is vital to us. We were looking to build on last week’s performance today, which we definitely did. We got off to the best possible start, but lost our way a little throughout and deserved to concede the equaliser. However, we started the second half with heaps of energy and a new look to our game, and deservedly came out on top. We’re on a roll and want to keep it going.

Julian Malatini: Every player dreams of scoring on their debut. I want to thank the team, who welcomed me with open arms. It’s an incredible feeling for me and I can also feel that within the team. I hope that this continues and that every game is like this one. Every player makes me feel at home here.

Justin Njinmah: It still feels surreal sometimes to be stood here on the pitch. People often only realise it when they wake up the next day. But everything feels right in this moment and I feel so happy. Climbing to ninth in the table just proves how well we’re progressing. We aren’t shying away from any team and are improving more and more by the day.

Marvin Ducksch: I think it's been another great day for us. We left it all out there and deserved to win. When you have such a small squad, everyone is dependent on one another, which spurs us all on. We know where we’ve come from and want to keep improving game by game. Something’s still in there for us in the remaining 15 games.

Ole Werner: We’ve beaten two of the top teams in the Bundesliga, which is a great feeling for us. If I’m going to be picky,we didn’t really find our feet before the break. The second half was then better, but we're not quite where we want to be yet.
