It was a tough afternoon to take for SV Werder after a narrow loss away to SC Freiburg. After putting their all into the match, the Green-Whites had to accept defeat in the dying seconds of added time, and came away with no points. Despite the disappointment, head coach Ole Werner praised the team for their performance, which demonstrated a huge improvement on the season-opener. “That’s why I’m actually satisfied with today’s performance, and the result is that little bit more frustrating”, he explained. WERDER.DE have summarised all the post-match reaction.

Head coach Ole Werner: “We are extremely disappointed. First and foremost, because the level to which we performed in an away fixture definitely deserved at least a draw. We were on par with Freiburg for most of the game. It’s clear that they created better chances than us – we just couldn’t pose a threat, despite being in great positions and situations to do so. We defended well all over the pitch, particularly our backline, and blocked many of their shots. The biggest chances in the first half, which Pavlenka stopped beautifully, arose from their own possession. That’s why I’m actually satisfied with today’s performance, and the result is that little bit more frustrating.”

Marco Friedl: “We feel immensely disappointed with the result, and that we couldn’t come away with the point we deserved. The chances were there – we took every shot that we could and put our bodies on the line when defending, even when we were tired at the end. We threw everything at it over the 90 minutes and tried our best to rescue a point. It was a strong performance on the road from us. If we had a few more games under our belt  and had recorded some wins already, we would’ve come out on top. Now we need to move past this and keep our heads held high. I’m certain that if we perform like this in the next few weeks, we’ll be able to win our games. We need to move on from this and focus on the task ahead.”

Christian Groß: “It’s a horrible feeling to lose like this. We defended relentlessly and fought well in the final third. We created some good chances, but just couldn’t score. Freiburg’s goal is a tough one to accept, especially when it was clear that we were performing well and could get something out of the game. It was neck-and-neck – whoever scored first would win. That’s what it comes down to in the end, regardless of how well you played. You simply have to score more goals than your opposition, which we just couldn’t do today.”

Mitchell Weiser: “It was a good game, but you can’t deny that Pavlenka was the reason we stayed in it. We attacked better today than we did against Bayern, but just fell short in the final third and lost the points as a result. I don’t know whether we actually deserved a point to be honest – Freiburg’s performance proved why they came out on top. It especially hurts because the game was deadlocked at 0-0 for so long and we then conceded on the final kick of the match. Despite this, our overall performance was definitely an improvement for us.”
