SV Werder Bremen rewrote history on Sunday afternoon after defeating reigning Bundesliga champions FC Bayern München. The 1-0 victory not only marked the Green-Whites’ first win on the road this season, but also their first in Munich in 15 years. The three points were also vital in keeping SVW clear of the relegation zone, and the atmosphere in the mixed zone was naturally positive as a result. WERDER.DE have summarised the reaction to the spectacle.

Head coach Ole Werner: “So much went right for us today. The boys did exceptionally well. They were able to constantly cause problems for Bayern and delivered an amazing defensive performance. We also did really well going forward. I can’t fault anyone today, they all did superbly. It was vital that we managed to pick up three points today, which is something we hadn’t necessarily set out to do. It’s been a long time since we’ve won and I’m thrilled that we came out on top, for both the entire team and the fans.”

Head of professional football Clemens Fritz: “I was insanely quiet the whole game, even when things got tense. The boys did exactly what Ole told them to: Believe and be brave. We repeatedly caused them problems in the first half, which was a decisive factor in the result today. There were naturally moments where we were under pressure, and we then had to work to get the result across the line."

Mitchell Weiser: “We obviously really enjoyed being able to celebrate with our fans. That was an amazing performance from us, because we did everything that was needed to come out on top here. It was my and a few of the others’ first win in Munich. This will do us good and is very important for us. There’s close competition in the Bundesliga and we had the perfect day, which meant we were able to beat Bayern. I’m just so happy that we managed to do it.”

Michael Zetterer: “It’s crazy for me to have even played here with all my family in the stands, let alone to have won. We knew that we needed to be on our A game today, and the boys performed superbly. We have to carry this self confidence with us and bring it onto the pitch next week.”

Romano Schmid: “That was an outstanding display of willpower. We prevailed in almost every pressure situation and had an exceptional game. We deserved the win, even when things got hairy towards the end. Yesterday, I just had the feeling that we were going to win today, as did everyone I spoke to. We've put in good performances against the top clubs before, and we were rewarded for that today."

Niklas Stark: “We felt really good today. Mitch and Romano said before the game that ‘Today is the day’, and thankfully they were right. Everyone did their job well and helped out the other players. Our midfielders kept things really tight, which meant that they hardly played in the final third. It was sensational and we’re more than happy with the three points.”

Justin Njinmah: “We heard from someone that we hadn’t won against Bayern in 32 matches. We came here with the aim of winning. We knew that we’d get our chances. I can’t explain how annoyed I was that my goal didn’t count. It was a small setback, but it just made our mindset even more apparent – we forgot about it pretty quickly. I’m buzzing that we won.”

Felix Agu: “It was the hardest, but also the best game that we’ve played this season, as we showed that we can compete with a side like Bayern. We wanted to be brave and play with confidence, which worked out pretty well. We put in a good performance. We didn’t give Bayern much space, restricted the amount of chances they had and hit them on the counter. It’s given us a real boost.”
