Following another successful home game last week, SV Werder now aim to finally pick up points on the road against VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday (15:30 CEST) and have been preparing for this test all week in training, as Ole Werner confirmed in the press conference ahead of the clash.

Pavlenka, Keita, Groß and Rapp are all still unavailable for selection, but Stark was back in team training this week and could potentially at least make an appearance off the bench. Werner commented that it’s also been good to have an additional player on the training pitch to prepare for the upcoming opponent. “On Sunday, we'll have to prove once again that we're capable of picking up points and then actually claim the points as well," said Werner.

In the eyes of the 35-year-old, VfL is a team that will compete for a place in Europe and that has good players in every position on the pitch. Attacker Jonas Wind stands out for him in particular, having already scored eight goals in nine games. “He’s playing well at the moment,” stated Werner, “but, Wolfsburg are more than just one player; they play well as a team and both defending against them and finding a solution to break through their defence are challenges.”

Werner also highlighted the intensity that Niko Kovač’s team bring to the pitch. “VfL play with more intensity than most other teams in the league in terms of distance covered, challenges and tempo,” commented the head coach. Organisation is also one of Wolfsburg’s strengths, although it’s clear that they haven’t managed to play their football consistently over the full 90 minutes recently. “They give away chances in phases and it’s our task to capitalise on that.”
