Academy talent Leon Opitz has extended his contract at SV Werder Bremen, signing his first professional contract in the process. The 18-year-old attacker, who is still eligible to play for the U19 side, played his way into head coach Ole Werner's side during pre-season and is now officially part of the Green-Whites' first-team squad.

“We are very happy with the development of Leon. He did very well during pre-season, putting in spirited and well-rounded performances and has therefore earned his place in the squad. We are pleased that we could extend his contract for the long-term and that we will be part of his future development,” explained Clemens Fritz, head of professional football.

“Obviously, my dream’s always been to one day play in the Bundesliga, but I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. The team gave me a nice welcome in summer and helped me a lot with the settling-in process. I feel at home at Werder, everything just clicks. I’m happy that I can continue to be a part of a Bundesliga team,” said Leon Opitz.

Leon Opitz moved from Hamburger SV’s youth team to SV Werder Bremen’s academy in 2020. He made his Bundesliga debut for Werder a few weeks ago against FC Bayern. He was also brought on in the closing stages of Saturday’s match against Mainz.
