SV Werder Bremen have appointed former Green-White Peter Niemeyer as the club’s new head of professional football for the start of the 2024/25 season.

On 1st July 2024, Niemeyer will step into his new role in the place of Clemens Fritz, who will take on the job of managing director for sport in the summer after Frank Baumann announced that he would be stepping down. The 40-year-old was most recently managing director for sport at third-division side Preußen Münster, with whom he is currently on the quest for promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.

“Peter is the perfect candidate for this role, and will bring a lot to Werder from both a personal and professional perspective. His experience as not only a player, but also as a sporting director and managing director for sport will, without a doubt, prove beneficial to the club. He will take care of any issues surrounding the first team, maintaining close contact with the players, staff, and coaches, while making decisions and taking responsibility for this area of the club. I’m delighted that he has chosen to come back to Werder,” said Clemens Fritz, who will soon be the Green-Whites' managing director for sport.

Peter Niemeyer is also excited for his new challenge: “I’m really pleased to be returning to Bremen as head of professional football. I’ve got lots of good memories of Werder and I was immediately interested in the chance to come back when the club got in touch with me. Being able to work together with Clemens was also crucial in my decision. It was important to me during this whole process that we came to a reasonable agreement with Preußen Münster, because I’m really thankful for the amazing time I had there with great people. I’m really excited for my new job, one that I chose after careful consideration. I’m looking forward to a really successful time in Bremen.”

Peter Niemeyer, who came through Twente’s academy and played over 100 times in the Eredivisie, was at Werder Bremen between 2007 and 2010, appearing 55 times. He was part of the team that won the 2009 DFB-Pokal final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Niemeyer represented Werder, Hertha BSC, Darmstadt 98 and Twente during his playing career, appearing 146 times in the Bundesliga, 106 times in the Eredivisie and 57 times in the 2. Bundesliga, scoring 17 goals in total.
