Werder have been knocked out of the DFB-Pokal after losing 3-2 to Viktoria Köln at Sportpark Höhenberg. After an early red card for Amos Pieper in the eleventh minute, Werder were forced to adapt to playing with only ten men. But even with a numerical disadvantage, the Green-Whites put in a mostly solid performance and earned their opening goal scored by Marvin Ducksch at the end of the first half (43’). The hosts started strongly after the break, with Philipp scoring two equalisers for the 3. Liga side (72’ & 79’) after Füllkrug had put Werder back in front from the penalty spot (77’). In the final moments of the game, Bogicevic hit the ball into the back of the net (90+4’), leaving Werder with no time to salvage their place in the next round of the Pokal.

Line-up and formation: Marco Friedl and Mitchell Weiser, who have just returned to training following injury spells, were on the bench, allowing Niclas Füllkrug to sport the captain’s armband. New signing Senne Lynen was also included in the Green-Whites’ squad.

41st minute: Schmid carries the ball into the 18-yard box, where Füllkrug and Ducksch combine well to get a show away, which comes painfully close to going in.

42nd minute:Bittencourt is knocked off his feet, providing Werder with a free kick from an ideal position. Ducksch takes charge and lifts the ball into the penalty box from the right side of the pitch. The ball is initially cleared, but the Green-Whites are getting closer!

Viktoria turn the game around in the dying seconds

49th minute:The hosts dominate the first minutes. Viktoria apply constant pressure and relentlessly search for a way forward. Up until this point, their attempts to threaten the Green-Whites have been unsuccessful. Werder drop players back to shore up the defence, but they’re struggling to get forward.

56th minute:A corner goes high and deep. A Viktoria player puts real power behind his effort, yet Pavlenka just manages to outstretch his hand and block it. Philipp then pulls the trigger on his shot from the right, where Pavlenka makes an impressive dive and punches it away. The subsequent corner appears to be dangerous at first; however, Pavlenka once again saves the day as it falls nicely into his hands.

67th minute:Schmid finds Stage on the left wing. He goes to cross the ball into Füllkrug, who is waiting to head it, but the delivery is intercepted by the Viktoria defender. Straight after, Werder have two huge chances, which neither Schmid nor Stage can put away.

72nd minute: Goal for Viktoria! David Philipp gets on the scoresheet to make it 1-1.

77th minute: A sudden turnaround! Niclas Füllkrug slots a penalty kick into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1 to Werder.

79th minute: The goals keep on coming. David Philipp scores again to bring Viktoria Köln back in the game. Schmid and Stark blocked each other’s path, allowing Philipp lots of space to attack.

90th minute +4: Viktoria turn the game around! Donny Bogicevic makes it 3-2 to the hosts.

90th minute +5: The final whistle blows! With a 3-2 defeat, Werder’s DFB-Pokal campaign has come to an early end.

Summary: Werder sat back too much as the second half went on, allowing David Philipp to equalise twice for Viktoria. With all the signs pointing towards extra time, the hosts exploited Werder’s lapse in attention and turned the result in their favour, claiming a 3-2 win.
