SV Werder Bremen got off to a bad start in their first of two friendlies against RC Strasbourg, conceding twice through goals from Lucas Perrin (6’) and Marvin Senaya (18’). Things were looking better for Werder about 20 minutes later after goals from Oliver Burke (28’) and Nick Woltemade (34’) brought Werder level. Unfortunately, shortly before the break, Lebo Mothiba scored Strasbourg’s third regain the lead (45’). On the whole, the second half was quieter than the first, with Justin Njinmah’s pace making the difference on a number of occasions. One resulted in a penalty in the 71st minute that he converted himself to make it 3-3, which ended up being the final score.

Line-up and team news: Marco Friedl, Naby Keita, Mitchell Weiser and Felix Agu didn’t travel to Strasbourg due to injury. Ole Werner selected the following team for the first match of the day:

Starting XI: Zetterer - Veljkovic, Njinmah, Salifou, Schmid, Burke, Gruev, Woltemade, Mbom, Groß, Röcker.

Bench: Because of the second friendly set to be played this evening, only Daniel Ihendu was named on the bench.

Plenty of first-half goals

First-half highlights:

6’: Lucas Perrin heads in Strasbourg’s opener from a corner, and Werder are behind after just a few mintutes. Not the start the Green-Whites were looking for!

9’: Ilia Gruev crosses into the box from a free kick on the right-hand side. Goalkeeper Bellaarouch is on hand to clear the ball away for a corner, which ultimately poses no threat to the home side.

15’: Christian Groß plays it long, searching for Manuel Mbom on the left flank, and the midfielder has space to get a cross in. He slightly overcooks it which means the resulting header doesn’t cause the Strasbourg defence any problems.

18’: Strasbourg score a second. Marvin Senaya is afforded far too much room on the edge of the box and decides to try his like. A powerful shot goes through several pairs of legs and nestles into the bottom-right corner past a helpless Zetterer.

27’: Nick Woltemade and Oliver Burke combine well on the right-hand side and work it into the penalty area. The move ends with Burke firing it into the far corner. Back in it!

31’: Werder have got a lot better since getting a goal back. Romano Schmid is next to have a shot, firing low from around 20 yards out on the right-hand side. The RCS keeper is able to take the sting out of his powerful effort.

34’: Romano Schmid latches onto a misplaced backpass and tries to knock it past the onrushing Bellaarouch, who brings the Austria international down in the box. Decision: penalty to SVW! Nick Woltemade coolly tucks it away with a precise spot kick into the bottom left corner to level the scores!

45’: A fifth goal comes against the run of play. A long ball lands in Werder’s penalty box and the ball is squared to Leo Mothiba, who has enough space to tap the ball home, which restores Strasbourg’s lead with one of the last kicks of the first half.

A quieter second half

Second-half highlights:

54’: Werder are awarded a free kick on the right side of the pitch. Gruev puts in a decent ball, and Veljkovic climbs to meet it, but the cross goes just over his head.

58’: This time Schmid stands over the free kick on the left-hand side, but he wants to try his luck on goal. Because of the tight angle, the effort doesn’t cause any problems to the French keeper, who saves comfortably.

60’: Strasbourg launch a counterattack, and they cross it in along the floor from the left flank. Zetterer is awake to it, though, and steps forwards to claim the ball ahead of the Strasbourg attackers ready to pull the trigger in the box.

71’: Njinmah dances around the Strasbourg defence once more and gets himself in on goal. Just as Romano Schmid did in the first half, he tries to go around the keeper and gets his ankles clipped. He steps up to take the resulting penalty, stuttering slightly before rolling the ball into the bottom-left corner.

76’: Justin Njinmah is in the thick of it once again, attacking with pace before trying his luck from 16 yards out. Woltemade was there in the middle ready to tap home and was possibly a better option.

87’: A failed free kick offers Strasbourg another chance on the counter, but Manuel Mbom sprints back and throws himself in front of Rabby Nzingoula’s effort. What a great last-ditch block! One which has surely spared Werder from defeat.

90’: Full time. Werder and Strasbourg draw 3-3 in the first friendly of the day.

Summary: Werder started poorly and found themselves two down after 20 minutes, but then things got better. They deserved their equaliser in the 34th minute, but to concede again just before the break was a bitter and unnecessary blow. The team all did their jobs well in the second half and didn’t allow their opponents many chances. The speedy Justin Njinmah caused the Strasbourg defence some problems and was the key factor behind our next equaliser. With the exception of the first 20 minutes, SVW can be very pleased with their performance in this game.
