SVW suffered a 4-0 defeat in their first game of the Bundesliga season. Despite the scoreline, Werder came close to getting back in the game against Bayern in the first 15 minutes of the second half, yet the Bavarians were just more clinical in front of goal. The visitors led 1-0 at the break thanks to an early goal from Leroy Sané (4’), after which the game was left open and both teams had chances. Bayern utilised these better, with goals from Harry Kane (74’), Leroy Sané (90’) and Mathys Tel (94’) ultimately earning their victory.

Line-up and formation: Marco Friedl and Mitchell Weiser were back in the starting eleven after sitting out against Viktoria Köln, with new signing Senne Lynen making his Bundesliga debut for SV Werder. Oliver Burke and Romano Schmid started the match on the bench.

Starting XI: Pavlenka - Pieper, Veljkovic, Friedl - Weiser, Lynen, Jung, Stage, Bittencourt - Füllkrug, Ducksch

Substitutes: Zetterer - Kownacki, Njinmah, Schmid, Rapp, Burke, Gruev, Opitz and Groß.

A bad start for SVW

Highlights from the first half:

4th minute: Leroy Sané opens the scoring for Bayern – a bad start for SVW. Bayern turn up the heat in midfield. Kane plays a clever ball in the path of Sané, who is able to manoeuvre his way through the entire Werder defence. Sané has a clear 40 metres to run towards goal, where he carries the ball and holds his nerve, slotting the ball into the back of the net to the left of Pavlenka.

9th minute: Ducksch whips a free-kick into the box, where Füllkrug finishes from close distance. The home fans celebrate, but this is short lived. The goal is ruled out for offside.

19th minute: Everyone breathes a sigh of relief. Musiala dribbles quickly through the midfield. The Germany international travels towards the box and then takes a shot unopposed from a central position from 18 yards, which whizzes narrowly past the bottom of the left post.

34th minute: Goretzka has a go from distance, but Pavlenka mitigates the danger with a strong save.

40th minute: SVW start to show signs of a strong attack – Füllkrug sets up Ducksch for a shot from 20 metres, but is denied by Ulreich. A possible goal wouldn’t have counted anyway due to the offside position, but it was an impressive effort!

45th minute +3: Half time! Werder enter the break 1-0 behind – Bayern are in control of the game. SVW presented passion and determination in their play. It’s still all to play for.

Promising period for Werder comes without reward

47th minute: Werder are pushing for the equaliser. Füllkrug plays a lovely ball into the six-yard box, Bittencourt slides in and studs it a few inches wide.

49th minute: SVW are right in this game! Füllkrug controls well and strikes just over the bar.

59th minute: Bayern wake up as Coman turns in the box and hits the far post with his effort.

62th minute: Kane aims to pick out the bottom corner, but Pavlenka gets down to parry it clear.

74th minute: Harry Kane makes it 2-0. Davies plays in the England captain, he takes a couple of touches and then finds the bottom corner.

90th minute: Sané’s second seals it for the record champions. Substitute Müller plays it across the box to Sané and he has an easy finish for 3-0.

90th minute +4: Mathys Tel grabs a fourth for FC Bayern. Davies passes it to him from the byline and Tel thumps it home, leaving Pavlenka with no chance.

90th minute +6: Full time. Werder lose 4-0 to FC Bayern.

Summary: Unlike Bayern, Werder didn’t manage to convert their chances into goals. Had the home team done so, it would have been a totally different game in the end. Bayern did control large parts of the match and created more opportunities too, so SVW cannot complain with the result in the end. Ole Werner’s men will put this one behind them and regroup for next week!
