After the third Bundesliga matchday, it’s time for the first international break of the season. Following the home game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday 2nd September (15:30 CEST), the focus for six Werder players turns to their international sides. Marco Friedl and Romano Schmid are also on standby for Austria.

Werder's new arrival Olivier Deman has been called up to the Belgium national team for the second time. The “Red Devils” continue their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign at 15:00 CEST on 9th September against Azerbaijan. They then play Estonia at 20:45 CEST on 12th September. After Deman’s first call-up, the defender was brought on towards the end of the game against Estonia. Belgium lie in second place in group F, with Austria leading the way. Romano Schmid and Marco Friedl are on standby for their country.

National team call-ups have become the norm for Jiri Pavlenka and Milos Veljkovic. The former will meet up with the Czech side, who are currently top of group E, as they face Albania on 7th September (20:45 CEST), before their friendly game against Hungary on 10th September (18:00 CEST). Milos Veljkovic will also play on those days, as Serbia face off against Hungary on the 7th (20:45 CEST) and Lithuania on the 10th (20:45 CEST). Serbia currently occupy second place in group G, but are level on points with leaders Hungary. Both teams have seven points after three games.

Woltemade and Opitz called up for Germany’s youth sides

Three more Werder players have been called up for the youth sides of their national teams. Nick Woltemade will join up with Germany U21s, who play against Kosovo in a EURO qualifying on 12th September. They will also play a friendly against Ukraine on 8th September. Leon Opitz and Germany U19s are due to play two friendlies: one against England on the 6th and the other against Switzerland six days later. Werder’s youth ‘keeper, Spyridon Angelidis, will join up with Greece’s U19 side – the date of their friendly against Bulgaria is still to be decided.
