Niclas Füllkrug will leave Werder Bremen to join last season’s runners-up, Borussia Dortmund. The two clubs reached an agreement on the penultimate day of the summer transfer window.
“Right from the start of this transfer window, we said that we would like to keep Niclas, but that we would have to discuss together if an offer came in that was suitable for all sides. That’s what has now happened, which is why we have made the decision to sell Niclas. We would like to thank Fülle for all his strong performances over the last years and wish him all the best in Dortmund,” said Clemens Fritz, head of professional football as SVW.
Niclas Füllkrug joined the Werder academy at the age of 13, going on to feature for all of the club’s youth sides. He made his Bundesliga debut for the Green-Whites before leaving for stints at Greuther Fürth, Nürnberg and Hannover. The striker returned to his boyhood club in 2019, and featured in 124 competitive matches for the Green-Whites (49 goals). Füllkrug was the Bundesliga’s top goalscorer in 2022/23 (16 goals) and earned his first caps for Germany’s senior national team that same season, featuring for his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
