Olivier Deman made his Bundesliga debut on Sunday 17th September against 1. FC Heidenheim, where he provided his first assist with a perfectly-weighted cross for Mitchell Weiser, who headed home the equaliser for the Green-Whites. However, his happiness was short-lived, as Werder let the game slip away from them after their comeback and conceded two more goals. “We didn’t get any points out of it in the end,” said Deman in light of the 4-2 defeat. “I’m really proud to have made my debut for the team, but feel frustrated that we fought so hard and still came home empty handed.” Nevertheless, the Belgian brought a breath of fresh air into the game, which will make the Werder fans excited to see what he’s capable of in future games.

It’s been an exciting few weeks for Olivier Deman, which started with receiving his first international call-up for Belgium under Domenico Tedesco. The 23-year-old then left his hometown after transferring to SVW from Cercle Brugge, and integrated well into his new team thanks to the support from fellow Belgian Senne Lynen. “We knew each other a little bit before we came here and speak the same language, so we can help each other out,” Deman explained. “The other boys also speak English well and have been super welcoming to me.”

A pleasant surprise

The international break came straight after Deman’s transfer to the Green-Whites, which didn’t give him long to adjust to his new surroundings. Despite not making his debut in the 4-0 victory over Mainz 05, the midfielder was excited by what he saw. “I watched some videos before coming here, but I was pleasantly surprised by how unreal the atmosphere is in person. The support was also great in Heidenheim, which was something I’d never experienced before,” he laughed. “That’s when I knew that I’d made the right decision by coming to Werder.”

Deman seemed to acquire a taste for Bundesliga action after playing his first 45 minutes for the Green-Whites on Sunday, and is working hard in training to prove himself worthy of getting more game time. “The Bundesliga is one of the best leagues in the world, and I feel honoured to be able to play on such a huge stage,” Deman shared. “The games are face paced, but I’m used to it as I came from a team that played at a high intensity. I’m really looking forward to the next few games, and I’m ready to give my all and help the team win. That’s my number one priority.”
