Head coach Ole Werner has agreed a contract extension shortly after the end of the Bundesliga season. Sporting director Frank Baumann announced the good news on Tuesday afternoon.
“Ole Werner and his team have done some incredible work, namely our promotion from Bundesliga 2 and then our subsequent survival in the top flight,” explained Baumann. “He took over the side during an extremely difficult period in late 2021 and managed to form a successful team whilst playing an attractive style of football. With his personality and idea of playing, he played a big part in us securing safety with a matchday to spare as a promoted side. We were never even in the relegation zone this season,” added Baumann.
“You can see that Ole feels right at home in Bremen and fully identifies with Werder. His qualities as a coach help to develop the team and each individual player. He also feels that he can continue to develop himself and he’s eager to learn new things. We’re therefore delighted that he will continue to work with us here at Werder,” commented Clemens Fritz, head of scouting and professional football.
Ole Werner is also excited about the extension: “My time so far at Werder has been successful and positive in almost every regard. We’re in the process of developing a team that can establish itself in the long run in the Bundesliga. I’m pleased to take on this challenge because I feel like everybody here is working together towards the same common goal.”
Werner’s coaching team will all continue to work with him in the future too.
Ole Werner became Werder Bremen head coach at the end of November 2021 and won promotion back to the Bundesliga in his first season in charge. He then successfully guided the club to safety in 2022/23. The 35-year-old previously worked as head coach at second-division side Holstein Kiel.
