What a game! SVW, yet again, showed their complete fighting spirit right until the final whistle and took three important points home from VfL Bochum 1848 with a 2-0 win. Even though the Green-Whites had the game under control at times, it was hard work for long stretches, in which Bochum had the chance to open the scoring more than once. In the end, however, SVW showcased their spirit again. After Bochum’s opener was ruled out for offside, Werder went ahead through Füllkrug’s diving header (86’). Füllkrug added a second to his tally from the penalty spot and made it 2-0 just before VfL had another goal chalked off for offside.

Line-up: Head coach Ole Werner made two changes to the starting line-up for the away trip to Bochum. Romano Schmid and Niklas Schmidt came into the starting eleven and, in doing so, made their first start for the Bundesliga season. Jens Stage had to settle for a place on the bench. Leonardo Bittencourt was not in the squad due to an on-going injury to his rib. Lee Buchanan was also missing after he took a knock to his knee in Friday’s training session. Benjamin Goller and Fabio Chiarodia made up the rest of the places with their return to the matchday squad.

Starting Eleven: Pavlenka – Jung, Pieper, Ducksch, Weiser, Füllkrug, Veljkovic, Schmid, Schmidt, Friedl and Gross.

Bench: Zetterer – Stark, Stage, Burke, Rapp, Goller, Agu, Gruev and Chiarodia.

A lively game with fighting spirit on both sides

Highlights from the first half:

1st minute: First good chance for Bochum. A bit of carelessness at the back from Werder allows Takumo Asano through on goal. Pavlenka parries the ball across the face of the goal.

2nd minute: Bochum’s Kevin Stöger unleashes a shot from the edge of the penalty area and narrowly misses the left post.

16th minute: Mitchell Weiser does very well on the right hand side, moves inside and tries to put in a through ball. However, the Bochum defenders are alert and get a block in.

21st minute: A Bochum mistake releases Füllkrug for a one-on-one. Manuel Riemann comes out of his own box and makes the save with his legs. The linesman then raises his flag, albeit extremely late.

23rd minute: Füllkrug is in again! But again he’s stopped by Riemann with another fine save. The rebound just falls out of Füllkrug’s reach.

24th minute: It remains lively. On the counterattack, Jordi Osei-Tutu tries his luck from 20 metres out but misses the target.

31st minute: Romano Schmid collects it in midfield and travels a few metres before he passes the ball to Ducksch, but he fails to get it past Lampropoulos.

42nd minute: Niklas Schmidt with an incredible free kick from about 25 metres out! The ball flies towards the goal and past the goalkeeper. Unfortunately, Schmidt can only rattle the woodwork.

44th minute: A quick attack from the hosts – Zoller collects the ball right on the six-yard box but can’t find a way past Pavlenka, who parries it across the box. Asano, waiting, jumps on the rebound – Jung, however, is wide awake and smashes the ball clear.

Werder leave it late again

Highlights from the second half:

48th minute: Bochum storm towards the Bremen goal again. Asano wants the ball on the edge of the six-yard box, but Pavlenka is able to gobble the ball up just in time.

52nd minute: Ducksch dribbles through the defence and shoots, however his shot lacks power and doesn’t cause any problems for Riemann.

54th minute: Schmid has the opportunity to shoot about half a yard outside of the Bochum box. Instead, he chooses to try and find Ducksch, but, this time, Gamboa gets a foot to the ball to send it out for a corner.

60th minute: Werder are definitely on top. Ducksch tries his luck one more time, but Riemann pushes the ball away into the middle of the box. There, the Green-Whites pick the ball up and try to scramble it across the line but take one too many passes.

63rd minute: Gerrit Holtmann crosses the ball into the Bremen area, where Simon Zoller rises to head the ball. Pavlenka makes a well-timed saved and has to follow this up again with another! He gratefully clutches the ball after the follow-up.

70th minute: A free-kick from Bochum is initially blocked before the ball goes up in the air again. Asano nods it into the path of Anthony Losilla who is lurking in front of goal. Pavlenka makes himself big and pulls off a huge save for Werder.

82nd minute: Bochum have the ball in the back of the net! But the referee chalks it off; it appears to have hit Philipp Hofmann’s hand as it went into the net. The score remains 0-0.

86th minute: GOOOAL FOR WERDER! What a header! Oliver Burke controls a long ball from Pavlenka and heads down to Weiser. He whips it into the middle of the box perfectly onto the end of Füllkrug’s run. Füllkrug buries it powerfully into the back of the net! Werder go ahead with not much time left on the clock!

90+2 minutes: Penalty for Werder! Oliver Burke goes to ground after being hacked down by Lampropoulous. Füllkrug prepares to take it.

90+2 minutes: GOAL FOR WERDER! Füllkrug converts the penalty.

90+6 minutes: Bochum pull one back! Philipp Hofmann produces a fine cross and Erhan Masovic only needs to tap it in.

90+6 minutes: VAR overturns the goal. Erhan Masovic was in an offside position. The scoreline remains the same, 2-0.

90+10 minutes: Full-time!

Summary: In the end, SV Werder fought hard for these important three points in Bochum. Especially at the start of the game, the Green-Whites had some difficulties controlling the game. Bochum came out the blocks with high intensity and lots of pressing, causing Werder problems for the entire 90 minutes. However, Bremen’s morale and fighting spirit until the final whistle were rewarded. After the Bochum goal was disallowed, the Green-Whites step it up a gear and within 10 minutes had made it 2-0. In the final minutes, Bochum’s had a second goal chalked off, thereby securing the clean sheet.
