It has not yet been even 48 hours since Werder’s gutting DFB Pokal exit against Paderborn, but attention has already been turned towards the next Bundesliga game. On Saturday (23rd October, 15:30 CEST), the Green-Whites will be tasked with an away game against Freiburg. Head coach Ole Werner delivered a team news update at his pre-match press conference.

After having missed both captain Marco Friedl (adductor issues) and Christian Groß (illness) for the Paderborn game, as well as the precautionary substitution of Niklas Stark during the game, a defensive shortage quickly arose. Werner had some good news on this front: “Marco Friedl trained individually on Thursday. He will then be training with the team and we will see if he is fit for Freiburg. Christian Groß trained on Thursday too, but we’ve got to see how fit he is. We will run a few medical tests to see if his body has recovered from his illness. Niklas Stark’s situation is still unclear. We will have to check how ready to train he is, and then how much he can do. Other than them everyone else is fit.”

Back in the squad for the visit to Freiburg is forward Marvin Ducksch. “We are happy that he is available once more.  His suspension is over,” Werner told the press. “Without giving away too much, it’s highly likely that we’ll see him on the pitch.
