SV Werder’s 2-0 away win against VfL Bochum was their second win of a still young Bundesliga campaign, and the sixth away game without defeat in a run spanning back to last season. Niclas Füllkrug managed to score a brace in the game, one of which was a penalty. This was the second penalty he has scored this season. No other Bundesliga player has scored more from the spot, with Marius Bülter level on two as well. WERDER.DE has compiled the key statistics after matchday 5.

Werder managed to achieve their first clean sheet of the season against Bochum, in no small part due to a number of good saves from Jiri Pavlenka. At the other end, the Green-Whites showed that they continue to carry an attacking threat right to the last minute. Goals number eleven and twelve for the season were both scored in the last few minutes of the game, the second of these in additional time. This was the fifth goal in five games this season that they have scored in additional time, which has never happened in the Bundesliga before! Of Werder’s twelve goals, five have been scored in the first 23 minutes of goals, with the rest all after the 85th minute.

With his two goals against Bochum, Niclas Füllkrug not only helped Werder climb to eighth in the table, but also meant that he is now the leader scorer in the league, level with Sheraldo Becker of Union Berlin. Union have scored twelve goals in their first five games, level with Werder; only Bayern Munich have scored more (17). The first goal of the day was a Füllkrug header, meaning Werder maintained their record of having scored a header in every game so far this season.

The assist for the goal came from Mitchell Weiser, his third in total for the 2022/23 season. This puts him in second place league-wide for assists, level with former Werder player Florian Kainz. Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani leads the list having got one assist more. Weser also leads among Werder players in other statistics, having won the most duels of any Werder player. He also ran the most kilometres of any Werder player against Bochum, running 11.3 km of a combined 113.3 km from Ole Werner’s men.
