Even a few days after the 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund, Niklas Schmidt still recalls the latter stages of the game at the Signal-Iduna Park with a twinkle in his eyes. Social media has ensured he has seen plenty of the games’ conclusion. “You could see the goals everywhere [on social media]. It was pure emotion, an amazing day for all of us. Because of it, we have also been able to enjoy the last few days,” said Werder’s number 22 on Wednesday, while talking to the media. He has particularly enjoyed watching back the goal he scored in the 93rd minute to draw the game level at 2-2: “In the morning when I wake up and at night when I go to sleep. I want to relive the moment again and again in my head.”

After a “really not all that bad cross” from Amos Pieper, the 24-year-old headed the ball low into the bottom right hand corner of the Dortmund net. What followed was “pure emotion” and a sprint across the pitch in order to celebrate with the Werder fans. “I just let everything out. I also don’t think that I have ever run so quickly,” reflected Schmidt, laughing, “I didn’t know, that we would score again, so I went all out and really wanted to celebrate with the fans. They were on the other side and I had to run a few metres, which in the moment I gleefully accepted. I wanted to show that the result always belongs to them, and that they created an unbelievable atmosphere in Dortmund, so I wanted to enjoy this with them.”

It was the midfielder’s first Bundesliga goal. “The likelihood that I would score with a header was not so high. I always imagined that I would smash the ball into the top corner from 30 metres.” Schmidt is forced to smile about his heading ability, “I’m also happy that it went like this. If I score with a header it’s also not bad, I am happy to score regardless of what part of the body it comes off.”

It was a goal that has given the 24-year-old’s reassurance: “Reassurance that I can play at the top level, regardless of the opposition. I will get opportunities, am able to play a part in deciding the game and can take the game by the scruff of the neck.” It is obvious that that the way the game went in Dortmund can give Schmidt, and the team overall, a push in the right direction, but Schmidt is staying grounded, “Despite all the euphoria from today we have to forget about Dortmund. We need to make sure that we continue to work hard and that we focus on Frankfurt. We have to maintain the self-confidence and the belief that we can win any game. We also know that we start every game at 0-0 and have to give 100% to be competitive.”
