As expected, it was a difficult friendly, but SV Werder were able to come away successfully. The Green-Whites won 1-0 against Schalke thanks to an early Niclas Füllkrug goal (4’), and are able to go into the rest of the Bundesliga season with a positive feeling. But, after taking the lead, Jiri Pavlenka was called upon numerous times to defend the lead. In the second half, Bremen missed several chances to make it 2-0, before the game lost its tempo due to numerous substitutions and finally ended with SVW claiming a deserved win.

Line-up and formation: As a dress rehearsal for the restart of the Bundesliga, head coach Ole Werner named players in the starting eleven who also started most games in the first part of the season. The team also set up in their usual formation, with three-at-the-back and two strikers. In comparison to the other two friendlies, there were much less substitutions in order to prepare for the Bundesliga’s return next weekend.

Starting eleven: Pavlenka – Jung, Stark, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Füllkrug, Veljkovic, Gruev, Friedl und Groß.

Substitutes: Zetterer – Pieper, Stage, Salifou, Dinkci, Schmidt, Buchanan, Mbom und Chiarodia.

Füllkrug allows early Werder celebrations, Pavlenka makes numerous saves

First half highlights:

4: Goal for Werder! A well-struck cross from Anthony Jung from the left finds an unmarked Niclas Füllkrug in the box. The German international’s initial header is saved, but he slams home the rebound into the roof of the net. What a start! 31‘

25’: Pavlenka is called into action. Soichiro Kozuki breaks through on the right-hand side and shoots powerfully at goal. Pavlenka manages to glove the ball out for a corner. The Czech international is called into action once again and is in the right place to deal with a dangerously placed Matriciani.

31’: Pavlenka is called upon once again. Cedric Brunner sends Danny Latza through with a ball into the final third. Pavlas rushes out of his box and is able to stop the ball with his right foot.

35’: After a nice one-two with Marvin Ducksch, Ilia Gruev finds himself on the edge of the box. His placed effort into the bottom right corner is parried away by Schwolow.

45’: Pavlenka accidentally plays the ball to Terodde. However, he is able to atone from his error one-on-one and comes away with the ball.

Werder search for a second

Second half highlights:

55’: Almost 2-0. The ball falls to Niclas Füllkrug having been launched into the box, who beats one man and fires a shot at goal. His shot narrowly misses the right-hand post.

66’: A long ball from midfield is headed on by Marvin Ducksch towards the back post, where Leonardo Bittencourt was running in. Ralf Fährmann beats him to the ball and kicks it clear before Werder’s number 10 could get anything on it.

80’: Bittencourt and Füllkrug combine, with the latter sliding the ball through to an onrushing Weiser. The full-back gets a toe on the ball but Fährmann comes out to meet him and smothers it.

82’: Stage heads the ball onto Füllkrug, who beats Matriciani before firing the ball on goal whilst falling. Fährmann gets down well to turn it behind for a corner.

90’: Dress rehearsal completed. SV Werder claim a 1-0 win in their last game before the Bundesliga restart thanks to an early Niclas Füllkrug goal.

Match reaction

Head coach Ole Werner: “We got what we wanted, which was a friendly at our level. The setting was good, it felt like a real football match. In the first half, we played reasonably from kick-off, however we were slightly sloppy. With the ball, we essentially found space, but with not enough tempo. This was better in the second half. The bottom line is that we can go into the final week of training feeling reasonably good.”

Marco Friedl: "We approached the game like a league game. We wanted to put into practice what we will be doing next week.It was a tight game and everything was asked of us. We managed to clear a lot of their attacks at the last moment, which should give us self-confidence. Playing in possession is what we have to do better. It is good for us to have contested a game like this. Even if there wasn't three points on the line, we're pleased to have kept a clean sheet."
