The 34-year-old will be without his leading goalscorer Niclas Füllkrug for the away game against the record champions. “We will see who we pick and how we approach the game in terms of personnel and tactics,” said the coach on his possible replacements. “We will try to play our best game possible with the squad available to us – that’s what we want to be judged on.”
The game against the league leaders will be a particularly difficult one, and also a game where Werder may have to sit a little deeper than usual. “Bayern is the toughest away game of the season,” said Werner. “You need a perfect day and need a few of the opposition to have a bad day – plenty of things have to come together. But ultimately there is only one thing that we are in full control of, and that’s our own performance.”
Despite the injury setback, there is still hope that Werder can record their first win away at Bayern in over 14 years. “Our room for error is very, very small, both in and out of possession,” Werner stated. “You’ve got to be careful if you’re talking about the weaknesses of one of the best teams in the world: but we will continue to look for spaces that we can utilise – and then we will see what happens…”
